x402 Services for Agents — The 2026 Landscape

Compiled October 17, 2026 · 147 primary sources · 7 deep-dive chapter reports · 100+ verification grep

Bottom-line up front

x402 is a real, scaled payment rail for AI agents — but the supply of paid services wildly outstrips actual demand. As of October 2026, the CDP Bazaar alone indexes 15,455–43,354 paid endpoints depending on the snapshot [5], and cross-directory aggregators report up to 131,675 endpoints across six sources [4]. Yet only 3.74% (578 of 15,455) of those endpoints have ≥5 unique payers in the prior 30 days, and only 33 (0.21%) have ≥100 unique payers [5]. Coinbase's headline number — 165M+ transactions, $50M+ cumulative volume, 480K+ agents since launch [6] — and the x402.org homepage number — 75.4M tx, $24.2M, 94K buyers, 22K sellers in 30 days [7] — describe the same protocol but measure different cohorts. The x402 Register's price-matched floor puts "real" x402-originated USDC revenue at $27,374 across 1,603 rated services over 30 days, with one payer-and-receiver pair accounting for 93% of all transfers [8].

The winning categories, ranked by trust-filter cohort (unique payers per 30 days), are search (Exa, Firecrawl, Munition, Tavily aggregator), onchain data (OneSource, Nansen, Glassnode), crypto price feeds (CoinGecko, Birdeye at $0.003/call), inference (x402engine's catalog of 80+ LLMs from $0.002 to $3.79/call), and agent infrastructure (QuickNode x402 proxy — 1M free reqs/mo on Base/Solana/Polygon) [9][10][11][12][13][14]. The eight-category breakdown from x402 List (Data 362 / AI 184 / Verification 117 / Finance 102 / Blockchain 71 / Other 50 / Content 44 / Compute 16 — total 946 services, Oct 10 2026) puts Data at the top by service count, but the Verification category punches above its weight because agents need KYA (know-your-agent) and identity primitives more than any other primitive.

The structural gaps are in the verticals that are most popular with agents but most fragmented in supply: SEC EDGAR / financial filings (seven MCP servers exist; zero are x402-paid), healthcare/clinical trials (ClinicalTrials.gov is free, but FDA, payer, and EHR data are KYC-walled), real estate / property records (Zillow/MLS walled behind OAuth), government civic data (USAspending, permits are public but no x402 layer), and identity / KYC (Persona, Stripe Identity, Plaid deliberately behind API keys). Each represents a wedge where a 1-2 person team could plausibly ship a paid MCP server in 30 days and tap the gap.

1. Headline metrics (October 2026)

Six independent monitors tell six stories about the same protocol. None of them is wrong; they measure different slices.

Monitor What it counts Headline Source
Coinbase (Agentic.Market, Apr 20 2026) All-source cumulative 165M+ tx, ~$50M+ volume, 480K+ agents [6]
x402.org (homepage, 30d) All-source live 75.4M tx, $24.2M volume, 94.1K buyers, 22K sellers [7]
x402 List (Oct 10 2026) Services + facilitator on-chain 946 listed, $1.22M 30d volume, 7.2M settlements, 36 facilitators [15]
x402 Register (Aug 27 2026) Independent probe + price-matched 2,015 services, $895k ceiling, $27k floor, 487 earn anything [8]
OnChain Agent Intel (Aug 17 2026) CDP Bazaar by unique-payer filter 15,455 endpoints; 3.74% (578) have ≥5 payers; 33 have ≥100 [5]
x402 Endpoint (Oct 7 2026) Cross-directory aggregator 131,675 endpoints across 6 directories, 10 categories [4]
CDP Bazaar (live 2026) Auto-indexed on settlement 23,000+ resources indexed since Feb 2026 [16]

The single most actionable number: Coinbase's CDP facilitator has processed 100M+ transactions and $28M+ in volume across Base and Solana since launch [17]. That is the proven rail [17]. Every other number is a derivative [17].

The single most sobering number: of the 2,015 services the x402 Register rated on Sept 19 2026, only 82% earned a grade A for spec compliance, but only 487 services (24%) earn anything at all [8]. An endpoint that lights up a Bazaar listing is not the same thing as a service that actually has paying customers [8][5].

2. Protocol and governance

2.1 The protocol

x402 is an open standard that revives the long-dormant HTTP 402 Payment Required status code [1][18]. The flow: an unpaid request returns 402 with machine-readable payment requirements (scheme, network, asset, amount, payTo, extra) [19]. The client signs a stablecoin payment — EIP-3009 transferWithAuthorization for exact, Permit2 permitWitnessTransferFrom for upto, off-chain vouchers + escrow for batch-settlement [19][20]. A facilitator verifies the signature, broadcasts the on-chain settlement, and returns a PAYMENT-RESPONSE header; the server releases the resource [19][18]. Coinbase CDP indexes x402 v2 as the current shipped spec [16].

Three schemes live in the spec as of October 2026:

  • exact — pays a fixed amount per request. The base case. Supported on every facilitator [19][16].
  • upto — authorises a maximum, settles actual usage. Apify uses this for Actors whose cost is variable [10][22].
  • batch-settlement — escrow + off-chain vouchers, one on-chain claim covers thousands of payments. PayAI shipped a Solana batch settlement preview with Solana Foundation on Oct 7 2026 [22][23].

Three schemes are planned/in-progress on EVM: auth-capture (hold, capture, void, refund), sign-in-with-x (SIWX for wallet-based session auth), and the payment-identifier extension (carries a stable identifier across retries) [23][21].

2.2 Governance

The x402 Foundation announced its operational launch under the Linux Foundation on July 14, 2026, with 40+ member organisations: Coinbase, Cloudflare, Google, AWS, Mastercard, Stripe, Visa, Circle, Fiserv, American Express, Adyen, Polygon Labs, Solana Foundation, MoonPay, Ripple, Shopify, Monad Foundation, Stellar Development Foundation, thirdweb, NEAR, LayerZero, KakaoPay, Microsoft, Quant Network, zerohash [24][25]. The legal wrapper is x402, a Series of LF Projects, LLC, which keeps governance votes and intellectual property outside any single member's balance sheet [26]. The protocol was first contributed by Coinbase at MCP Dev Summit in April 2026 [27] and formalised as an LF project by July [24].

2.3 Adjacent / competing protocols

Three competitor / sibling standards claim the same HTTP 402 territory [29]:

  • MPP (Machine Payments Protocol) — co-authored by Stripe and Tempo, launched March 18 2026 alongside Tempo's mainnet [28][29][30]. MPP registers Payment as an HTTP authentication scheme in the IANA registry (alongside Basic and Bearer), so challenges arrive in WWW-Authenticate and proofs go back in Authorization [28][29]. It's payment-method-agnostic — stablecoin on Tempo, fiat via Stripe Shared Payment Tokens, cards via Visa, Bitcoin via Lightning [29][30]. Stripe accepts both x402 and MPP, and a server can offer both without conflict [28][29]. At launch: 100+ services including Visa, OpenAI, Anthropic, Shopify, Zinc [31].
  • AP2 (Agent Payments Protocol) — Google's application-layer mandate protocol for proving a human authorised a purchase [32]. Sits above x402/MPP, not in competition [29][32].
  • ACP (Agentic Commerce Protocol) — Stripe and OpenAI's checkout protocol for product discovery + delegated payment. ACP already powers ChatGPT Instant Checkout [33].
  • Visa Trusted Agent Protocol, Mastercard Agentic Tokens — application-layer identity/compliance, complementary to x402 [25][34].

The 2026 reading: x402 owns the crypto-native agent economy; MPP is the first credible bridge from that economy to the card networks' installed base; ACP answers "where do I shop?", AP2 answers "am I allowed to buy this?", x402 answers "how do I pay with crypto?", MPP answers "how do I pay across any rail, at scale, with enterprise controls?" [29][33].

3. Discovery layer — eleven catalogs and zero canonical source

The x402 ecosystem has eleven primary directories, each measuring a different slice [1][2][3][4][15][37][39][40][41][42]. There is no single source of truth [4][15][8].

3.1 Comparison

Directory Host / operator Total listed Methodology Public access Key differentiator
CDP Bazaar Coinbase CDP [2][16] 15,455–43,354 (live) [5] Auto-indexed by facilitator on every settlement Unauth REST + MCP The only facilitator-indexed catalog

x402 Valoria x402.valoria.net [41] 25 commerce services shown; 33 facilitators tracked On-chain revenue ranking Public dashboard Facilitator-level + revenue ranking ($148.2M total volume)
x402 Hub x402hub.ai [42] Categories: Agents, Runs, Subscriptions, Intelligence, Reputation, Verifications, Attestations Agent economy platform with reputation REST API, paid calls Reputation/attestation-first — ERC-8004-style ID

Total: 11 distinct directories. Four are facilitator-indexed or facilitator-derived (Bazaar, Agentic.Market, Valoria, PayAI facilitator); three are probe-monitored (x402 List, x402 Register, x402 Endpoint); two are aggregators (x402 Endpoint, On-Chain Agent Intel); the rest are curated hubs.

3.2 The trust-quality funnel

The most actionable insight from cross-directory analysis is that catalog size is inversely related to "real demand":

  • Bazaar Market Map (Aug 17 2026): 15,455 indexed endpoints → 99.4% have ≥1 unique payer → 77.9% have exactly 1 payer → only 3.74% (578) have ≥5 payers → only 33 (0.21%) have ≥100 payers [5].
  • x402 Register (Sept 19 2026): 2,015 services graded, 82% grade A for spec compliance, 54% expose /.well-known/x402 descriptor [8].
  • x402 List (Oct 10 2026): 946 services listed, 887 payment-ready, 13 verified FORTE, 117 listings under Tier 1 "LoneStarOracle"; avg uptime 97.5% trailing 30 days [15][43].

In other words: most endpoints are listings, not businesses. The endpoints that actually have customers sit in the top 0.21% of the catalog.

3.3 Methodology disagreements

The directories disagree by two orders of magnitude on what counts as a "service":

  • Coinbase Bazaar auto-indexes on every facilitator settlement, so it counts the long tail. 15K–43K endpoints depending on snapshot.
  • x402 Register probes and never pays, so it counts only endpoints that answer a valid 402 challenge. 2,015 services.
  • x402 List applies both 402-handshake and paid probes, so it counts only endpoints that actually deliver paid data. 946 services.
  • x402 Endpoint aggregates six directories and applies its own heuristics, surfacing 131,675 endpoints including duplicates across listings [4].

All four numbers can be correct simultaneously because they measure different things. The x402 Register's published illustration of the gap between "$895k all-source USDC ceiling" and "$27.4k price-matched floor" is the cleanest example of why raw wallet totals are unreliable proxies for x402-originated revenue [8].

4. Facilitators — the settlement layer

The facilitator is the only component that needs to hold gas. The server never does. There are at least 36 facilitators as of Oct 10 2026 according to x402 List's on-chain monitor [43], but only a handful carry meaningful volume.

4.1 The two production heavyweights

Facilitator Networks Pricing Key differentiator
Coinbase CDP Facilitator [17][2] Base, Polygon, Arbitrum, World, Solana First 1,000 onchain tx/month free, then $0.001/tx; EIP-3009 (USDC, EURC) or Permit2 (any ERC-20); OFAC + KYT screening on every transaction [17] The default — 100M+ tx, $28M+ volume [17]
PayAI [22][44][45] Solana, Base, Polygon, Avalanche, Arbitrum, Sei, X Layer, SKALE, Peaq, IoTeX First 1,000 lifetime free credits per new wallet (1 credit = $0.001); above free = gas + 30% markup in credits; sponsored Solana gas [44] Solana-first, sub-second settlement, batch settlement on Solana (Oct 7 2026), OFAC screening [22][44]

4.2 Facilitator comparison

  • Coinbase CDP (default on Base + Solana) — 100M+ transactions, $28M+ volume, built-in OFAC + KYT screening. The largest by absolute volume [17].
  • PayAI — Solana-first, 9 chains live, sponsored gas, fast batch settlement. Free credit model (1,000 lifetime) gets merchants integrated without signup. Behind BlockRun's ClawRouter — 26,860 transactions worth $1,825 from 160 unique agents in 63 days, $0.067 average ticket, 1,396ms avg settlement time on Solana [44][46].
  • thirdweb — founding Foundation member, multi-network facilitator with portal-based key management [25][47].
  • Concordium — protocol-level identity, joined Foundation Sept 23 2026. Every wallet is tied to a verified human (privacy-preserving); Sponsored Transactions (Protocol 10, March 2026) so the agent never needs CCD for gas [34].
  • Coinbase Stellar facilitator — free, gas sponsored via OpenZeppelin Relayer. Near-zero fees; default for true sub-cent micropayments [48].
  • xpay — public mainnet facilitator with no account/API key, Base mainnet exact scheme. Used as fallback by services that don't want CDP lock-in [49].
  • x402.org public facilitator — Base Sepolia only; not for mainnet [49].

4.3 The 36 facilitators

The x402 List on-chain monitor recorded 36 facilitators with at least one EOA in the prior 30 days, 147 settler EOAs total, and 20 with activity in the prior 7 days [43]. Beyond Coinbase CDP and PayAI, the named facilitators include cross-chain boutique providers, thirdweb, Concordium, Nevermined, Stripe (which routes x402 through PaymentIntents on US merchants), AWS AgentCore (when configured), and several smaller per-chain facilitators on SKALE, Sei, IoTeX, Peaq. The ecosystem-wide on-chain USDC settlement volume measured at the facilitator level for Oct 10 2026 was $1.22M in 30 days [15].

4.4 Self-hosting vs hosted

Most production services pick CDP or PayAI. The cost-plus economics on PayAI are explicit: 1.52 credits ($0.00152) on Solana exact, 2.31 credits ($0.00231) on Base EIP-3009 exact, 0.76 credits ($0.00076) on Solana batch-settlement — roughly half the per-call cost of ordinary exact [44]. Self-hosting is feasible (Anvil, Kora on Solana) but rare because CDP and PayAI absorb the gas and the KYT/OFAC obligation.

4.5 Agent API keys via x402 itself

PayAI ships a meta-payment loop: an autonomous agent can buy a facilitator API key over x402 by POSTing to merchant.payai.network/api/v1/keys/vend. The paying wallet becomes the account identity. $1 minimum. The secret is returned once and never emailed [44]. This is the closest the ecosystem has to "agents can self-onboard to the rail without ever touching a human".

5. Wallets and agent identity

x402 works with three wallet classes: lazy-provisioned custodial (no private keys), self-custodial smart-account (programmatic spending rails), and protocol-level identity (account anchored to a verified human).

5.1 Wallet comparison

OpenAI AgentCore Payments [17] USDC on Base via x402 Managed runtime wallet ✅ Cookbook: 0.25 USDC per data-provider request with approval grant

5.2 The agent-trust stack

Three orthogonal primitives sit on top of x402 payments to enable agent identity, reputation, and authorization:

  • ERC-8004 — onchain agent identity + reputation + validation registries. Per On-Chain Agent Intel, 25,393 agents indexed on Base + Ethereum, 3,405 "live" (endpoint 2xx AND capability declared), 277,710 reputation feedback events, 44 "commerce-backed" agents [38]. x402 Hub implements ERC-8004-style flows (claim, stake, attestation) [42].
  • Concordium protocol-level identity — every wallet is tied to a verified human; the link is encrypted, distributed across independent parties, reachable only through a court-ordered legal process. Privacy is structurally protected, accountability is structurally available [34].
  • Nevermined + Visa Intelligent Commerce — agent cards with persistent delegated spending authority on existing card rails. Announced Apr 9 2026 [55]. Nevermined markets the "agent can spend a budgeted amount within scope" model that complements x402.
  • Google AP2 — application-layer mandates for delegated human authorization [32].

6. The MCP layer — how agents actually discover and pay

x402 has three distinct MCP surfaces: a wire-level transport spec, a hosted discovery MCP (the Bazaar), and a growing third-party server ecosystem [2][56][58].

6.1 The transport

The wire-level mechanics of paid tool calls over MCP were codified as an x402-foundation extension. The four-step handshake [56][57][58]:

  1. Client calls a paid tool with no payment attached.
  2. Server returns a tool result with isError: true and a PaymentRequired payload (MCP's equivalent of HTTP 402 + PAYMENT-REQUIRED).
  3. Client builds a payment payload, retries the same callTool with the signed payload at _meta["x402/payment"] (MCP's equivalent of PAYMENT-SIGNATURE).
  4. Server verifies, settles, returns the real tool result with settlement info at _meta["x402/payment-response"] (MCP's equivalent of PAYMENT-RESPONSE).

Signing payload unchanged from HTTP variant: EIP-3009 TransferWithAuthorization for exact, Permit2 permitWitnessTransferFrom for upto [10].

6.2 The Bazaar MCP server

The CDP Bazaar exposes a hosted MCP server at https://api.cdp.coinbase.com/platform/v2/x402/discovery/mcp with three tools [2][56]:

Tool Does
search_resources Semantic search over the Bazaar catalog — same index and filters as the HTTP search endpoint
proxy_tool_call Calls a discovered resource by toolName and arguments. If the resource requires payment, returns a payment-required tool result which your client resolves using the x402 MCP transport
validate_endpoint Read-only diagnostics for an x402 URL

6.3 Third-party MCP servers

At least eight distinct third-party MCP servers wrap paid x402 services. The pattern is consistent: an MCP server publishes tools, each tool call routes to an x402 endpoint, the wrapper handles 402 → sign → retry transparently.

Server Provider Tools Price range Key use
x402node MCP [58] x402node 117+ $0.0001-$0.10/call (cap default) Auto-syncs from CDP Bazaar every 5 min
x402engine MCP [11] x402engine 50+ $0.001-$0.12/call LLM gateway, web search, code execution
Wisely Enterprises x402 Agent Payment [59] Wisely Multi varies x402 payment layer for AI agent calls
rccola990 X402 Agent Store [60] rccola990 Multi varies x402 payment-gated agent store
Hermes Asia x402 MCP [61] kten-agent 9 $0.02-$0.03/call Asia market intelligence (CN/TW/JP trade, BOJ, Nikkei, China real estate 2026, etc.)
fernsugi x402-mcp-server [62] fernsugi 4 varies DeFi data endpoints (whale concentration, funding rates)
microchipgnu/x402-mcp [63] microchipgnu 2 $0.001 Minimal Hono example
@x402-api/mcp-server [64] x402-api 8 varies x402-api.fly.dev crypto/DeFi data
Apify Actors MCP [10] Apify 89,000+ Actors per-Actor Web scraping/automation; 20,000+ Actors x402-enabled

The Apify integration is the single most consequential MCP-x402 development in 2026: as of June 30 2026, 20,000+ Apify Actors went live on x402, a 10× jump from the ~2,000 paid endpoints that existed before. Every Actor is callable at a plain REST endpoint with an X-APIFY-PAYMENT-PROTOCOL: X402 header; the server returns 402 with both upto (variable cost) and exact (fixed cost) payment options [10].

6.4 Distribution arc: the architecture

                  ┌─────────────────┐
                  │ AGENT (Claude │
                  │ Code / Cursor) │
                  └────────┬────────┘
                           │ MCP tool call
                           ▼
              ┌──────────────────────────┐
              │ Bazaar MCP (CDP) │ [2][56]
              │ search_resources │
              │ proxy_tool_call │
              │ validate_endpoint │
              └────────┬─────────────────┘
                       │ HTTP + X-PAYMENT header
                       ▼
            ┌──────────────────────────────┐
            │ Paid x402 service │ [10][11][58]
            │ (CoinGecko, Exa, Birdeye…) │
            └────────┬─────────────────────┘
                     │ Settlement
                     ▼
            ┌──────────────────────────────┐
            │ Facilitator (CDP or PayAI) │ [17][44]
            │ verify + settle on Base/ │
            │ Solana/Polygon │
            └──────────────────────────────┘

The pattern: an MCP server auto-discovers Bazaar endpoints every 5 minutes, republishes them as MCP tools, and wraps every tool call with payment handling [58]. x402node does this [58]; x402engine does this [11]; the Wisely and rccola990 servers do this manually [59][60].

6.5 Distribution reality

The zero-CAC distribution story is the single biggest advantage of the x402 + MCP pairing: a service that ships its MCP server to the Official MCP Registry + Glama + Smithery + mcp.so + LobeHub gets picked up by Claude Code, Cursor, Replit, and Windsurf automatically — no marketing spend. Add an x402-payable endpoint published on PayAPI Market and the x402 Bazaar, and the agent discovers + pays + consumes in the same loop.

7. Service categories — best performers and gaps

7.1 The eight-category map (x402 List, Oct 10 2026) [15][43]

Category Services Avg uptime What lives here
Data 362 92.6% CoinGecko [9], Nansen [12], Glassnode [13], Birdeye [67], Allium, Bloomberg, Google Maps, Zerion, Wolfram Alpha [6]
AI 184 83.9% OpenAI, Venice, ElevenLabs, Anthropic, Cluster Protocol [68], Groq, DeepSeek, x402engine [11]
Verification 117 92.8% KYC, KYA, identity, agent reputation [42]
Finance 102 93.7% DEX data, OTC desks, on-chain portfolio analytics [41]
Blockchain 71 91.1% EVM RPC, Solana RPC, BNB RPC, indexers [14]
Other 50 86% Catch-all (including government, healthcare, climate, IP) [40]
Content 44 95.5% Articles, paywalled media, news feeds, riddle/entertainment [3]
Compute 16 87.5% Code execution, sandbox, browser automation [10][11]

Data is the largest by service count; AI is the largest by revenue per service. Compute is the smallest — by far — which is itself a signal: agents are calling compute through MCP-wrapped commercial inference APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, DeepSeek) rather than paying per second for raw compute. Compute-as-a-service on x402 is an open wedge.

7.2 The seven-category map (Coinbase Agentic.Market, Apr 2026) [6]

Category Example services
Inference OpenAI, Venice, ElevenLabs
Data CoinGecko, Nansen, Allium, Bloomberg, Google Maps, Zerion
Media dTelecom, Portal Foundation
Search Firecrawl, Browserbase, Exa
Social LinkedIn, X, AgentMail
Infrastructure Alchemy, thirdweb, Pinata, MongoDB, Amazon S3, AWS Lambda, QuickNode
Trading Bankr, Coinbase Advanced Trade

7.3 Per-category best performers

Data — the dominant category

The Data category wins by absolute count and by agent demand [15][43]. The canonical examples:

  • CoinGecko — $0.01 USDC per call on Base or Solana. Live since Feb 10 2026 with 5 endpoints (/simple/price, /onchain/simple/networks/{network}/token_price/{contract_address}, /onchain/networks/{network}/tokens/{contract_addresses}, /onchain/networks/{network}/trending_pools, /onchain/search/pools). CoinGecko publishes a step-by-step x402 walkthrough and ships a Python SDK that handles the sign-and-retry loop [9][65]. Sub-cent at volume >10K calls/month becomes more expensive than a $35/mo Basic subscription; <10K is the agent zone.
  • Nansen — $0.01-$0.05 USDC per call on Base, Solana, or Monad. 3 endpoints live: POST /api/v1/profiler/address/current-balance ($0.01), POST /api/v1/smart-money/holdings ($0.05), GET /api/v1/tgm/flows ($0.01). Supports x402 v2 only; deprecated v1 clients rejected. 50% off first 100 calls for any wallet that advertises via X-Payer-Address [12][66].
  • Glassnode — $0.05 USDC per call for metrics, $0.01 USDC per call for metadata, on Base. Mirrors the standard Advanced API one-to-one; same time-series format as the keyed API [13].
  • Birdeye — $0.003 USDC per call for the full REST API. Real-time token data across Solana, Sui, and major EVM chains; trading data, wallet analytics, market discovery, token security, new listings [67].
  • x402engine crypto endpoints — /api/crypto/price $0.001, /api/crypto/markets $0.002, /api/crypto/history $0.003, /api/crypto/trending $0.001, /api/crypto/search $0.001, /api/wallet/balances $0.005, /api/wallet/transactions $0.005, /api/wallet/pnl $0.01 [11].

The pattern that wins in Data: single-cent flat pricing, USDC on Base, no API key. CoinGecko and Nansen both chose $0.01 as the floor, even for endpoints where the underlying cost is higher (Nansen's smart-money/holdings is $0.05). Birdeye dropped to $0.003 to undercut subscription pricing. What works: known brand + sub-cent pricing + zero-account setup. What doesn't work: complex tiered pricing, rate-limit games, KYC for pay-per-call access.

AI / Inference — where the leverage is

AI is the second-largest category and the highest-margin. Two distinct shapes:

  • Replicated commercial APIs at a markup. x402engine's catalog of 80+ LLMs (/api/llm/gpt-4o $0.018586, /api/llm/gpt-4o-mini $0.002458, /api/llm/o1 $0.104370, /api/llm/claude-opus $0.070034, /api/llm/claude-sonnet $0.083743, /api/llm/deepseek $0.003625, /api/llm/grok $0.018578, /api/llm/perplexity $0.022022, …) [11]. Each call is one x402 charge; the merchant fronts the LLM API key and pockets the spread.
  • Standalone small models running on a free tier. Cluster Protocol at 100% 30-day uptime, $3,500 daily volume, $3.50/tx avg [68].

The Apify + x402 integration is the most consequential AI development of 2026: 20,000+ Actors are now callable via x402, supporting both upto (variable cost for batch operations) and exact (fixed cost for single runs) [10]. Apify is the largest single supply-side addition to the x402 catalog.

Search — Exa and Firecrawl are the per-call winners

Search pricing has converged to sub-cent [69]:

Provider Operation Price
Exa /search instant up to 10 results $0.004
Exa /search fast/auto up to 10 results $0.007
Exa /contents up to 20 URLs $0.001
Firecrawl /scrape single page $0.001-$0.01
Firecrawl /search up to 20 results $0.001-$0.03
AgentSearch Web Search up to 5 results $0.005 (no account)
Tavily search varies $0.005-$0.06
Munition resold Exa/Firecrawl/Serper various $0.002-$0.03
Tavily + Exa + Firecrawl Deep Aggregator merged deep search $0.05

The pattern: Exa is the cheapest per call at sticker price ($0.004) but requires an account and API key. AgentSearch is the cheapest keyless ($0.005). Munition wraps the three (Exa, Firecrawl, Serper) and resells them at the same price point but manages provider keys for the buyer [69].

The x402 Listing revenue leaderboard for search (from Tanod's Bazaar demand snapshot, Oct 16 2026) [70]:

  • stableenrich.dev/api/exa/search (Exa, resold) — $0.01/call, 176 wallets, 26,032 calls — the highest-volume search listing on x402.
  • api.exa.ai/search (Exa, direct) — $0.007/call, 88 wallets, 5,080 calls.
  • blockrun.ai/api/v1/exa/search (Exa, resold) — $0.011/call, 44 wallets, 1,388 calls.

What works: reselling a known engine at the median price beats going cheaper; wallets pay ~$0.01 even when $0.004 is available because the listing is found in Bazaar.

Infrastructure — the rails

Infrastructure services don't compete on price; they compete on reliability and chain coverage:

  • QuickNode x402 — 1,000,000 free requests/month per agent, pay-per-request, credit drawdown (SIWX + JWT), and nanopayment (Circle Gateway) models. USDC on Base, Solana, Polygon; queries any of 140+ supported networks [14]. Free tier is the giveaway that powers most new-agent onboards. Launched June 9 2026 [71].
  • Alchemy, Pinata, MongoDB, AWS Lambda — named in Coinbase Agentic.Market launch [6].
  • AWS WAF Monetize — June 2026, AWS added AI-traffic monetization for CloudFront. Sample deployment takes USDC on Base or Solana; publishers set per-request prices and receive USDC directly [31][48].
  • AWS AgentCore — bundled with the AgentCore Gateway; Coinbase x402 Bazaar is a pre-populated integration [2].

Trading and Commerce — narrow winners

Valoria's commerce category (33 facilitators tracked) shows two services account for ~$830K of $961K revenue:

  • agent.paywall402.com — $415.8K, 31.5M payments
  • market.lnpay.ai — $415.8K, 31.5M payments
  • pay.codenut.ai — $413K, 1.6M payments
  • kale.x420.dev — $93.7K, 434K payments
  • basetomcat.com — $20.3K, 535K payments [41]

The pattern: the top revenue earners in x402 commerce are token-sale or loyalty platforms, not data APIs. Most listed services have $0-$5K revenue. The top 5 of 25 services account for ~85% of tracked commerce revenue.

Verification — KYA is the sleeper category

The Verification category has 117 services and the second-highest uptime (92.8%). It includes agent reputation services (trust-agent.io, thetrustlayer.xyz, asterpay.io, devvizion.com, graphadvocate.com) [38]. ERC-8004 has 25,393 agents indexed; 44 are "commerce-backed" (got-paid cohort) [38]. This category punches above its weight because every x402 payment needs an agent identity behind it to be audit-able. KYA (know-your-agent) is the future.

Weather — surprisingly well-served

Weather has 21+ paid endpoints via x402-weather.vercel.app [72]; aerobic contract for ensemble forecasts ($0.05-$0.10) [73]; 2s.io ships 8 NOAA/ECMWF/USGS endpoints at $0.0018-$0.0025/call [74]; Hugen, LoneStarOracle, VWeatherStation, Clink Forge all in x402 List top-10 [75]. Hugen Weather has 100% 30-day uptime and 390 verified buyers in 30d [75]. Commercial gap is closing fast — the wedge closes by Q1 2027.

The following 20 categories were scored against a 5-criterion rubric (each 1-5, sum to 25 max):

  1. Demand from AI agents — 5 = many agents need it; 1 = few
  2. Data accessibility — 5 = public/free; 1 = tightly held
  3. Per-call x402 fit — 5 = clean sub-cent; 1 = requires human review
  4. Incumbent strength — 5 = strong incumbents make it hard; 1 = weak/none
  5. Wedge economics — 5 = clear $50-500/yr indie wedge; 1 = no clear business model

8.1 Top 10 wedges (ranked)

Rank Category Score Demand Data x402 fit Incumbents Wedge Why it works
1 SEC EDGAR / financial filings 20 5 5 5 2 3 7 MCP servers exist, zero on x402; SEC EDGAR public + free + structured; sub-cent per call perfect for x402
2 Government civic data (USAspending, permits, code enforcement, 311) 18 4 5 5 2 2 Socrata-style endpoints are public + free; no x402 layer
3 Macro / economic indicators (FRED, BLS, Census, World Bank, IMF) 18 4 5 5 3 1 FRED API has 800K series, FBreg-end-key friction, MCP applied directly
4 Real estate / property records 17 4 4 4 4 1 Zillow walled; county assessor data is public by state; no x402 layer
5 Patent / IP data (USPTO, EPO, WIPO) 17 3 5 5 3 1 USPTO bulk data is free; PATENTSCOPE API exists; no x402 layer
6 Climate / weather data 17 4 5 5 2 1 NOAA + ECMWF free; commercial providers like Visual Crossing, Meteosource ($9/mo+); wedge closing
7 Logistics / supply chain (MAERSK container tracking, freight rates) 16 4 3 4 4 1 Container tracking data partly public; freight rate APIs fragmented
8 Healthcare / clinical trials (ClinicalTrials.gov, FDA data, claims) 16 4 4 4 3 1 ClinicalTrials.gov free; FDA Orange Book free; payer claims KYC-walled
9 Media / news paywalled (Reuters, FT, NYT) 11 3 1 3 3 1 Walled behind OAuth, no per-call model; mostly infeasible
10 Identity / KYC (Persona, Stripe Identity, Plaid) 11 4 1 1 4 1 KYC-walled by design; the category itself is the antithesis of x402

8.2 The SEC EDGAR wedge (deep-dive)

The strongest wedge [76][77][78][79][80][81][82]. Seven MCP servers already serve SEC EDGAR data; none charge per call [76][77][78][79][80][81][82]:

  • mcpwright/edgar-mcp — 11 tools, lookup_issuer, list_filings, search_filings, get_recent_offerings, get_filing. Free, public SEC endpoints, no API key [76].
  • pipeworx-io/mcp-edgar — edgar_company_snapshot, edgar_ticker_to_cik, plus 13 more. Built on the public SEC EDGAR API. "20M+ EDGAR filings, 100M+ exhibits" available via host [77].
  • SEC-API-io/sec-edgar-mcp — Hosted MCP at https://api.sec-api.io/mcp?apiKey=YOUR_API_KEY, 49 tools. Pricing unknown but API-key gated [78].
  • adamhudson777/filingrail-mcp — RapidAPI-key-gated; 50 free calls/day. 7 tools [79].
  • secapi.dev — Node SDK + 9 MCP tools. x-api-key required [80].
  • arkolith.com/data/edgar — Live normalized firehose; 4.1M+ filing events; credit-based pricing (1 credit per call) [81].
  • henrysouchien/edgar-mcp — 29 tools, hosted API at www.edgarparser.com, EDGAR_API_KEY needed [82].

The wedge: package the public SEC EDGAR API (no key needed) + an XBRL normalizer + a Form 4 events firehose behind an x402 endpoint at $0.005-$0.02 per call, publish it on the CDP Bazaar + Apify MCP + ClawRouter. Why it wins: - Demand: every equity-research agent, every insider-trading tracker, every LLM doing diligence needs filings. - Data accessibility: SEC EDGAR public + structured XBRL. - Per-call x402 fit: $0.005/call, USDC on Base, no account. - Incumbents: 7 MCP servers exist but all are free or API-key gated; none have built an x402-paid layer. QuickNode's free 1M requests applies to chain reads, not to EDGAR specifically. - Wedge economics: indie founder can ship in 2-3 weeks; 50K calls/mo × $0.01 = $500 MRR.

8.3 Government civic data (the 18-score wedge)

USAspending.gov publishes all federal contracts, grants, and loans as a public API. Socrata hosts open-data portals for hundreds of cities (NYC, Chicago, SF, Boston). None has an x402 layer. A "Civic x402" wrapper that surfaces 50-100 city/federal endpoints at $0.005-$0.01 per call would have an immediate indie customer base in compliance, journalism, and procurement research [83][84][85].

8.4 Macro / FRED wedge

The Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED) API has 800,000+ time series, is public and free, and has a clear per-call shape. The 10 req/sec rate limit is a friction point for agent loops. A x402-paid FRED wrapper at $0.001/call (just below the rate-limit threshold) would clear the friction for backtest agents and macro-research LLM workflows. Composability with BLS, Census Bureau, BEA, World Bank APIs makes this a "Macro-Data-Lite" multi-source wedge [86].

8.5 Patent / USPTO wedge

USPTO bulk data is free; the patent search API at https://ppubs.uspto.gov/dirsearch-case/retrieval/... is rate-limited and unfriendly. The PatentScope (WIPO) API is open. The EPO Open Patent Services exists. None has an x402 layer. An indie wrapper that normalizes 3 sources (USPTO, EPO, WIPO), normalizes entity resolution, and charges $0.01-$0.05 per search would serve patent attorneys and prior-art researchers.

8.6 Real estate / property records wedge

County assessor records are public in most US states but inconsistent across 3,143 counties. Zillow is walled; MLS is gated by NAR rules. The wedge: assemble a multi-state parcel data API (NY, FL, TX, CA county recorders), normalize, charge $0.05-$0.10 per lookup. Real estate AI agents are an existing demand.

8.7 Logistics / supply chain wedge

MAERSK, Flexport, project44, and FourKites own the container-tracking rails. Each has a paid API with monthly minimums. The VesselFinder and MarineTraffic websites publish partial data via free APIs. A normalized multi-source vessel + container tracking API at $0.05/call (joined with weather + port data) would serve logistics agents.

8.8 Healthcare / clinical trials wedge

ClinicalTrials.gov is a free public API with 480K+ studies. FDA Orange Book, FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS), and CMS Open Payments are all public. An indie x402 wrapper at $0.005-$0.02/call would serve pharma research agents and clinical-trial-matching LLMs. EHR and payer data remain KYC-walled and are not wedgeable.

8.9 Climate / weather wedge — closing

NOAA, ECMWF, and NASA provide free weather/climate APIs. Commercial providers like Visual Crossing, Meteosource, and Tomorrow.io charge $9-500/mo. The x402 weather wedge is closing: as of Oct 2026 there are 21+ paid x402 weather endpoints [72], 8 from 2s.io [74], the Runway Weather Oracle [87], and 4 from the Agentropolis leaderboard [75]. By Q1 2027 this category will be saturated.

7.10 Closing the deal — what makes a wedge work

The top 5 wedges share four traits [15][8][5]:

  1. Public data source that is currently free but requires API key signup, rate-limit gymnastics, or scraping [76][77][78].
  2. Per-call shape that maps cleanly to sub-cent x402 pricing [9][12][67].
  3. Existing demand from agents that today pay $0 in friction (signup, rate limits) to access the data [76][80].
  4. No existing x402 layer — the white space [76][78][79].

Three anti-patterns to skip:

  1. Paywalled media (Reuters, FT, NYT) — OAuth-walled by design; no per-call model.
  2. Identity / KYC (Persona, Stripe Identity, Plaid) — KYC-walled; the category is the antithesis of x402.
  3. Premium news terminals (Bloomberg Terminal, S&P Capital IQ) — paywalled, account-gated, KYC, no per-call shape.

9. Pricing economics — what x402 services charge

The 30-day settlement economics of an x402 service break down into three layers:

9.1 Per-call price tiers (observed Oct 2026)

Tier Price Examples
Sub-cent $0.0001-$0.001 Crypto price feed [11], ENS resolve, x402 verify-only, IPFS get [11]
Single-cent $0.001-$0.01 CoinGecko [9], Nansen basic [12], Birdeye [67], Exa contents [69], Weather endpoints [74]
Multi-cent $0.01-$0.10 Nansen smart-money [12], Glassnode metrics [13], Firecrawl search [69], Tavily [69], Glassnode [13]
Premium $0.10-$1.00 Anthropic Opus inference [11], Apify Actor [10], premium tool calls [11], Cluster Protocol [68]
High-value $1.00+ LLM premium inference [11], full research synthesis [73], premium agent API keys [44]

The median x402 ticket is $0.12 (Dec 2025 BlockRun report) [88] and roughly $0.30 (Apr 2026 Agentic.Market Cryptonews coverage) [89]. Average ticket at ClawRouter was $0.067 over 26,860 transactions [46][88].

9.2 Per-call economics (CDP facilitator)

On a $0.001-cents tier the math is brutal:

Tier Merchant revenue Facilitator fee (CDP) Net merchant
$0.001 $0.001 $0.001 (after 1,000 free) $0
$0.01 $0.01 $0.001 $0.009 (90% margin)
$0.10 $0.10 $0.001 $0.099 (99% margin)
$1.00 $1.00 $0.001 $0.999

The CDP facilitator fee is $0.001 per onchain transaction after the first 1,000 free monthly. For sub-cent tickets, batch-settlement is the only way to keep the facilitator fee under 10% of the ticket [90]. Solana mainnet exact is 1.62 credits ($0.00162) per settlement; Base exact is 2.31 credits ($0.00231) [44]. With batch-settlement the per-call economics flip: one on-chain claim can cover thousands of payments.

9.3 Proxies.sx fee comparison

x402 vs Stripe on a $0.005/call AI inference ticket:

Rail Cost Overhead %
Stripe (2.9% + $0.30) $0.30015 6,003%
x402 on Base $0.001 20%
x402 on Solana $0.00025 5%

The crossover where Stripe's overhead drops below 5% is ~$10.35 per transaction. x402 wins at every price point below $10 [91].

10. Why most endpoints don't get paid — the structural issues

The 33/15,455 (0.21%) cohort that has ≥100 unique payers and the 578 (3.74%) cohort that has ≥5 payers is the heart of the puzzle [5]. Six factors determine whether an endpoint wins or becomes long tail:

10.1 Listings ≠ businesses

The x402 Register's analysis: the most-used wallet collects for 91 hostnames from one project [8]. Most "endpoints" in the catalog are 7-100 near-identical auto-generated routes from a few operators' suites of micro-APIs behind many hostnames (Vercel, Railway, Fly). The 14,765 catalog listings collapse to 1,119 distinct primary receiver wallets [8]. Catalog size is a misleading proxy for ecosystem breadth.

10.2 Bazaar regressions

Scry wallet intelligence had 13 of 16 canonical resources visible in the CDP Bazaar on June 24 2026, but by July 12 2026 that fell to 6 of 16. The regressions have no public root cause and persist for days [92]. The /air/book endpoint (per-call escrow payTo) was never catalogued despite settling successfully; the issue is that the resource URLs are absolute and the per-call escrow payTo may be flagged as a non-fixed wallet [93].

10.3 .well-known/x402 descriptor gap

Only 54% of services expose /.well-known/x402 [8]. Self-describing endpoints are the foundation of agent discovery; without the descriptor, agents must read a 402 challenge and parse metadata inline.

10.4 v1 vs v2 spec migration

97% of services speak x402 v2 as of Sept 2026 [8]; the remaining 3% are stuck on v1. v1 clients (X-PAYMENT header) are not accepted by v2 servers (PAYMENT-SIGNATURE header). Nansen explicitly notes that deprecated v1 clients are rejected with invalid_x402_version [12]. Migration is non-trivial for legacy integrations.

10.5 Price drift

44 of 2,015 services (2%) persistently charge a live price that does not match their catalog price [8]. The x402 Register measures this. Agents that budget a call based on advertised price can fail at settlement if the merchant has drifted.

10.6 Geographic and chain skew

Solana overtook Base for the first time in late summer 2026 (Solana ~518K x402 payments vs Base ~505K) [48]. BlockRun measured Base 53.3%, Solana 36.6% of registered endpoints as of Dec 2025 [48]. Chain choice affects which agents can call (Solana wallets ≠ Base wallets ≠ Monad wallets).

11. The five most important data points

  1. Only 33 of 15,455 indexed x402 endpoints (0.21%) have ≥100 unique payers in 30 days. The catalog is oversupplied by 100×. The companies that capture the agent market will be those in this 0.21% cohort. Source: On-Chain Agent Intel Bazaar Market Map, Aug 17 2026 [5][38].
  2. CoinGecko at $0.01/call is the canonical example. Launched Feb 10 2026; sub-cent pricing; no account; USDC on Base or Solana. The pattern that "x402 → real revenue → agent recurring traffic" has been proven. Source: CoinGecko docs + Coinbase launch post [9][6][65].
  3. Apify's 20,000-Actor MCP integration is the single biggest supply-side event of 2026. x402 jumped from ~2,000 endpoints to ~20,000+ in one integration. The upto scheme (variable cost) is what made this possible. Source: Apify blog, June 30 2026 [10].
  4. PayAI's batch-settlement on Solana, live Oct 7 2026, fixes the sub-cent economics. One on-chain claim covers thousands of off-chain vouchers. Sub-cent calls now have a path to facilitator-fee-under-10%. Source: Solana Foundation post + PayAI docs [22][44].
  5. Linux Foundation governance + 40 member orgs (Coinbase, Cloudflare, AWS, Google, Mastercard, Visa, Stripe, Circle, Shopify, Fiserv, Amex) = the institutional layer is locked in. x402 is no longer "a Coinbase experiment"; it's a vendor-neutral standard. Source: Linux Foundation press release July 14 2026 [24][25].

12. Recommendations

Three tiers of recommendation, ranked by immediate actionability [76][9][14].

12.1 Build a wedge (next 30 days)

  • W1 SEC EDGAR x402 layer ($0.005-$0.02/call): wrap the public SEC EDGAR API + XBRL normalizer + Form 4 firehose, publish on Bazaar + Apify MCP + Glama [76][77][78]. Estimated ship time: 2-3 weeks for a 1-person team.
  • W2 Government Civic x402 wrapper ($0.005/call): wrap 50-100 federal + city open-data endpoints (USAspending, Socrata portals, 311) [83]. Estimated ship time: 3-4 weeks.
  • W3 Macro/FRED x402 layer ($0.001-$0.005/call): wrap FRED + BLS + World Bank + IMF as a single "Macro-Lite" API [86]. Estimated ship time: 2 weeks.

12.2 Monitor the closing wedges

  • Weather x402: 21+ endpoints already live [72]; the wedge closes by Q1 2027 [74][75].
  • Crypto price feeds: CoinGecko, Birdeye, Nansen, Glassnode already at $0.003-$0.05 [9][12][13][67]; the wedge is closed.
  • Search x402: Exa, Firecrawl, Munition, Tavily [69] — closed.
  • LLM gateway x402: x402engine [11], Apify Actors [10], BlockRun [46] — closed.

12.3 Skip these

  • KYC / identity / Plaid — antithesis of x402 [32][55].
  • Paywalled media (Reuters, FT, NYT) — walled behind OAuth [29][33].
  • Identity-gated APIs (Bloomberg Terminal, S&P Capital IQ) — walled behind contracts.

13. Honest gaps remaining

These specific verticals were NOT covered in this round and would benefit from a focused follow-up:

  1. EU x402-stable basin (EURI Banking Circle EMT, EUROP Schuman, EURCV Quantoz/SG-Forge) — the x402 Foundation members include Adyen and Visa but the EU-specific stablecoin rail was not deep-dived.
  2. Enterprise financial controls on x402 — how do enterprise agents use spending caps, audit trails, KYT on x402? Concordium and Crossmint ship primitives but no real-world deployment data.
  3. Aggregator / router layer — x402scan, Agent402.Tools (531 tools), x402 Endpoint (131K endpoints) — the routing layer that decides which x402 endpoint to call for a given intent. Who builds this?
  4. Regulatory landscape — MiCA (EU stablecoin rules), FinCEN BSA, OFAC §31 CFR Part 501 — how does x402's $50M+ of stablecoin volume interact with these frameworks?
  5. v2.5 / v3 roadmap — the auth-capture scheme, the payment-identifier extension, sign-in-with-x — when do they ship?
  6. Multi-agent orchestration on x402 — when one agent pays another for work, what are the dispute, refund, and SLA primitives?
  7. x402 in regulated industries — financial filings (SEC EDGAR is wedge-able; FINRA, SEC enforcement actions are not), healthcare (FDA is wedge-able; HIPAA-covered PHI is not).
  8. The non-CDP / non-PayAI facilitator market — 36 facilitators tracked but only CDP and PayAI carry meaningful volume; what are the others, and why aren't they growing?
