Round 9 · Persona Pivot

Open Datasets × Indie & Seed Buyers

R1-R7 mapped institutional demand for agent-economy API wedges (Fortune 500, hedge funds, EU corporates, banks). R9 inverts the math: 24M US AI prosumers + 5M indie hackers + 50K seed-stage AI startups with $24-200/month per-capita spend and zero-CAC x402 distribution represent a $250M-2.5B SAM for indie-shaped data API products — same public data, 1/100th the ACV, 100x the LTV/CAC.

§00Bottom Line Up Front

If you only read one paragraph
  • Persona shift: the institutional buyers in R1-R7 ($5K-$250K ACV, 3-18 month sales cycle) are dwarfed by the indie/seed/prosumer segment (1.7M+ US prosumers × $50-2000/yr blended ARPU = $1.7B SAM at top-1%'s $903/mo).
  • x402 + MCP collapsed the CAC floor: a solo founder can ship a paid data API and have it discovered by agents via Glama + Smithery + PayAPI Market + the x402 Bazaar Smart Order Router with zero marketing spend.
  • The free public data is already there: FDIC, FRED, SEC EDGAR, OFAC, OpenSanctions, OpenCorporates, FFIEC, NCUA, EIA, USGS, LME, EU Open Data, arXiv, PubMed, OpenStreetMap, Open Food Facts — all free, all public, all USDC-pay-per-call-able.
  • The 5 wedges I recommend prioritising: (1) MCP-Forge meta-platform · (2) Canary-Indie (W12 indie cousin) · (3) KYC-Lite (W2 indie cousin) · (4) RegWatch-Lite (W4 indie cousin) · (5) DueDil-Lite (combines W2 + W4 for indie DD).
  • 3-yr indie wedge economics: 80% GM · $0-200 CAC · $0.0001-$0.05 per call · 1,000-100,000 customers · 50-200x LTV/CAC.
  • First wedge to ship: KYC-Lite (or MCP-Forge if a meta-wedge is preferred) — clearest indie use case + lowest build cost + strongest x402 fit.

§01The Four Buyer Personas

2.4M+ arXiv preprints · 36M+ PubMed citations · 65M Wikidata items
Persona D

Seed-Stage AI Builder Team Lead

1-10 person team, usually <$1M raised, building an AI-first product. AI Builder Club: 1,000+ active builders · 65% run 2+ coding agents · 4-6 engineers is the modal team. Cursor $2B ARR run rate.

§02AI Prosumer Spending (a16z / YipitData Oct 2026)

The top 1% of US consumer AI payers averaged $903/month in August 2026, up 80% in 18 months. This top 1% accounts for 19.5% of all observed consumer AI spend — more than the bottom 50% combined. 7.3% of Claude's paying users are on the $100+ Max plan, vs 1.1% of ChatGPT. Power users over-index on automation, product-building, and creative tools.

Hard ceiling on prosumer spend

Even the Tier 5 consultant at $812/month is a real ceiling. The next dollar in a prosumer's wallet goes to a different category. A data-API product at $20-200/month competes with Cursor, ChatGPT, Midjourney for the same dollar. It must replace a current line item, not stack on top.

§03The Indie SaaS Infrastructure Stack

A production-grade AI product can be built and run for $20-115/month. The free tier is real — Vercel + Supabase + Resend + PostHog + Sentry + Stripe + Lemon Squeezy + a single Claude/GPT key fits inside a $50-200/month burn. The "free → paid" jump hits at 50-200 paying users, when Vercel Hobby ToS forbids commercial use and Supabase Free auto-pauses after 7 days idle.

§04Free Public-Data APIs (the indie wedge floor)

These datasets a solo founder can hit from a laptop today with no billing setup define the floor of what's available for free. Any R9 wedge has to either (a) sit above this floor with paid enrichment, or (b) sit orthogonal to it with a new join/derivative.

§05x402 Per-Call API Ecosystem (R9's direct competitor set)

These services have already done the x402-integration work and have agent-callable endpoints. A new R9 wedge that also ships on x402 sits in the same discoverable surface, gets free distribution via the Smart Order Router, and avoids the CAC of convincing an indie founder to set up a Stripe account.

§06MCP Server Distribution Surface

Any data API exposed as an MCP server becomes consumable by Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Replit, ChatGPT, and every other MCP-aware client. A solo founder can ship an MCP server in a weekend; Composio gives them 100K free tool calls per month to do it.

MCP server directory sizes — September 2026
Distribution = $0

Ship a working MCP server, list it on the Official Registry + Glama + Smithery + mcp.so + PayAPI Market + x402 Bazaar, and you're in every Cursor and Claude Code install by next week. A new R9 wedge's cheapest distribution is MCP, not a website.

§07The 5 Recurring Indie Workflows That Need Data APIs

Pattern 1

Market intelligence for my side project

"I'm building a SaaS for HVAC contractors in the Pacific Northwest. I need a list of all licensed contractors, county-by-county permit trends, and a way to track competitor launches."

→ Contractor-OSINT API · $50-500/yr indie · $300-3,000/yr SMB
Pattern 2

Compliance check before launch

"I want to launch in EU. What do I need to know about GDPR, AI Act, MiCA, DORA, DAC7, CBAM, eIDAS, NIS2, ESRS, packaging?"

→ RegWatch-Lite (W4) · $120-1,200/yr indie · $600-6,000/yr SMB
Pattern 3

Background-check a counterparty before I sign

"A new client wants to wire me $20K. How do I make sure they're not on a sanctions list, aren't a shell company, and their UBO is a real person?"

→ KYC-Lite (W2) · $50-1,200/yr indie · $600-12,000/yr SMB
Pattern 4

Quant / trading signal for my own portfolio

"I trade my own money ($50-500K). I want a feed that tells me when a bank I'm watching is getting shaky, or a commodity supply is about to move."

→ Canary-Indie (W12) · $300-3,000/yr indie · $3-30K/yr quant
Pattern 5

EU identity verification to onboard a user

"I have a SaaS that needs strong KYC for EU users (PSD3, eIDAS 2.0). What's the cheapest way to verify an EU eID wallet?"

→ Verify-EU (W21) · $200-2,400/yr indie · $1.2-12K/yr SMB
Pattern 6

Due diligence before angel-investing

"I'm writing a $25K angel check. I need a quick read on the founders' backgrounds, the company's cap table, any open litigation, and any regulatory red flags."

→ DueDil-Lite · $300-2,400/yr indie · $2-15K/yr SMB/angel

§11Deep-Dive · MCP-Forge (R9-new, the meta-wedge)

A free hosted service that (a) lets an indie dev wrap any public API or open dataset as an MCP server in <30 minutes, (b) lists it on the Official MCP Registry + Glama + Smithery automatically, (c) handles x402 monetisation with no payment setup, and (d) gives the dev a per-call revenue dashboard. MCP-Forge makes the other 9 R9 wedges cheaper to ship and creates a 10x multiplier on indie data-API supply.

Why 25/25: if 1,000 indie devs ship 1 MCP server each through MCP-Forge, each monetising $100/month, that's $100K MRR for MCP-Forge itself ($5K rev share) plus an ecosystem of 1,000 working MCP servers that indie SaaS founders can plug into. Network effects + low marginal cost + zero CAC = classic platform.

TAM (multiple): indie API sellers: 100K plausible (matching r/IndieHackers 190K). Indie MCP consumers: 500K plausible (matching the Cursor $2B ARR user base × ~5%). Combined: $3-12M ARR MCP-Forge direct + $50-200M ARR enabled ecosystem.

§14Risks, Failure Modes, and Mitigations

"Free is good enough" failure

An indie founder just scrapes / queries the public API directly. Mitigation: your value-add must be enrichment — joins, normalisation, scoring, freshness, structured JSON envelope, MCP server packaging, x402 monetisation layer. A USDC-wrapped, MCP-published, schema-stable, call-counted wrapper around SEC EDGAR is worth $0.005/call even though EDGAR is free.

"Agent-search friction" failure

Agents can't find your service even if you build it. Mitigation: list on Glama + Smithery + mcp.so + PayAPI Market + x402 Bazaar; submit to Vouchity for trust score; publish an OpenAPI spec; write Tool-Use descriptions matching natural-language queries.

"Low switching cost" failure

An indie founder picks the cheapest x402 service every time. Mitigation: build proprietary enrichment (Canary-Indie's risk score, KYC-Lite's UBO chain). Document the switch cost in pricing (volume discounts, bundled lookups).

"Sandbox / abuse" failure

x402-paid services get scraped by agents for free. Mitigation: rate-limit, identify x402 payment before serving, charge per-byte for large responses, require API key for premium endpoints.

"Creator-economy bubble" risk

AI prosumer / indie hacker spending contracts in a 2027 recession. Mitigation: build for SMB + freelancer as well as prosumer; SMB treasury spend is stickier than prosumer hobby spend. Diversify across both personas.

"Smart Order Router" discoverability risk

x402 SOR may favour incumbent sellers with more reviews. Mitigation: launch with a small introductory price (e.g., 50% off) for first 100 buyers, then raise to list.

§1530/60/90 Day Roadmap for the Top-3 R9 Wedges

Day 0-30 · MVP ship

  • Build the data ingestion + scoring logic on a free Vercel + Supabase + Upstash stack
  • Ship a 1-page landing with $0 free trial (100 calls) + $20/mo Indie + $99/mo Pro

  • Build the indie launch playbook (Show HN template, IndieHackers post, etc.)
  • Reach out to 5-10 MCP/AI newsletters (TLDR AI, Ben's Bites, Latent Space, etc.)
  • Start an IndieHackers.com interview pipeline
Day 60-90 · $5K MRR / path to $50K

Add SMB pricing tier ($200-500/mo with team seats) · launch 2-3 cross-sell wedges (KYC-Lite + RegWatch-Lite + Canary-Indie bundled) · hire 1 part-time engineer · apply to YC W27 or comparable accelerator · publish 1 technical deep-dive post ("How I built a $X MRR API in 90 days") for SEO long-tail.
